Wishing you a Happy & Prosperous New Year!

From the desk of Pastor Jacob

The year 2016 has come and gone! We give thanks and praise to God for all the blessings we received and also for the challenges we were able to confront. For all the unfinished tasks, we remain resolved and determined to continue to move forward. But now as we look back in retrospect, we can only say Ebenezer! The Lord has taken us this far (1 Samuel 7:14). Now is the time to count all of God’s blessings for us; counting them one by one!  We also remember that God has been with us all the way through our struggles, pain, suffering, and loss. Some among us were transferred into glory; to be with the Lord. We thank God for all they were able to do in their lives; for family, friends and for our beloved church. We who remain will continue with their legacy into the future. May their souls rest in eternal peace!.

As we cross over into 2017, we carry our hopes, our visions, our aspirations, and our dreams with us! We also carry into the New Year, the realities of our human experiences which are both positive and negative. Amidst all the celebrations and the pomp and fanfare, many people are also hurting inside. To them the onset of a new year brings with it a great sense of hope and anticipation for the best possible opportunity for change. They have the hope that this is the year they have been waiting for when the best things will happen! As a community of faith, the church of our Lord Jesus Christ we welcome all these people and support them through their journey of searching. We are participants with God in God’s mission here on earth. We welcome all of God’s people with Open Hearts, Open Minds, and Open Doors!

Isaiah’s prophecy (43:19) is befitting for us at a time such as this: “I am about to do a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.” Indeed God will make a way for us. God will wipe away all our tears. God will heal our broken hearts. And God will save us in our time of distress. As Christians we have to take our faith to another level; a place where our faith is significant to our human experiences. And, the church must be the agent through which people’s lives can be revitalized, enriched, and transformed. We open our hearts to people regardless of their background, and make them feel loved and belonging. We open our minds and listen to people, even to those who are different from us. We open our doors without pre-conditions.

In 2017, our church will be the new thing to many, those who, despite having been church goers for most of their lives; their spiritual needs have not been met. Many people have experienced the longest spiritual drought and wilderness in their life. Others are beginning to question their faith, because they have not experienced it. Their faith is in their heads but not in their hearts. The church, and yes our church, will be the safe space for them to bring their most difficult questions. There are opportunities for us to talk about and ask questions about our faith. In 2017 we will be very intentional, to welcome people with Open hearts, Open Minds, and Open Doors. We will bring our UMC mission and our UMC motto into life through our different ministry opportunities; Small Groups, UMW, UMYF, Young Adults, UMM and through our mission programs.  HAPPY NEW YEAR!
